Paddle to Cabbage Tree Basin

Cabbage Tree Basin is an idylic location surrounded by Royal National Park and nestled between the 2 coastal townships of Bundeena and Maianbar (just 50 mins drive from the centre of Sydney).

Best departure point is from the Bonnie Vale picnic grounds where you can launch from a sandy and oyster-free beach front. If you don't have your own craft, you can hire from Bundeena Kayak and Stand Up Paddle for $30/hr or $60 for 4 hours and single kayaks $20/hr/$50 4 hours, double kayaks $30/hr/$80 4 hours.

This trip should be done on a run in tide (an hour or so before the high) where the high is at least 1.5 metres. Otherwise you'll bottom out along the shallow inlet.

From Bonnie Vale you can either go out to the end of Deeban Spit and then turn along the inlet or cheats can carry their boards across the spit and head straight into the sheltered waters. After heading along the inlet and passed mangrove ecosystems you'll come to a bridge and a bit of white water. You'll need to crouch down to get under.

The basin is a large expanse of water about 8 metres in depth. At the southern edge there is a grass patch where you can stop of for a break. Just be sure to watch out for the oysters when getting off your board.

Cabbage Tree Creek is a narrow hidden little creek that extends a few hundred metres on the southern side of the Basin. Listen out for the cicadas in the summer - they put on an excellent - and loud - performance!

The trip from Bonnie Vale to Cabbage Tree Basin by paddle board takes about 3 hours return if you go around the sandspit or 2.5 hours if you cut across the spit.

This really is one of the best paddling trips around Sydney and a great short paddle boarding day out!

We now stock Magoo Paddle Boards

We now stock the Magoo range of paddle boards and accessories. Magoo boards are exceptional quality and performance boards and they are the funkiest looking boards on the water! Drop down to Bundeena Kayak and SUP where you can test boards at our standard hire price of $30/hr (which you get back if you buy a new board).

Bundeena to Audley Eco-Adventure

A great day out was had by all our our Bundeena to Audley Eco-Adventure last Saturday. Most of the group caught the Cronulla Bundeena ferry service - it only takes 20 minutes and Bundeena wharf is just a short stroll away from our base at Bonnie Vale The trip left Bonnie Vale, Bundeena just after 9.30am with a group 12 of keen paddlers. The weather was absolute perfection - light winds, low 20s and run in tide. These sort of conditions always bring out the smiles :) We stopped for a break at Warumbul before heading up the river and deeper into the Royal National Park. Picture the stunning scenery! Gorgeous deep blue skies, clear turquoise waters, white sandy beaches and a group of smiling faces. Hope the picture is clear in your mind...because there are no photos this time! Decided that the good canon was going to stay at home this trip - it has risked life and limb..and water damage ...far too many times...just how many lives does a camera have?? Anyway getting a shock, waterproof (theft..and loss would be good too) proof soon. So look out for some great shots in the near future. Arrived at Audley around 1pm and cooked up a BBQ luncheon and enjoyed another beautiful area in our Royal National Park. Time for a dip, some sun bathing and relaxing before the bus trip back to Cronulla. I'm sure a perfect day was had by all!

Kayak Sydney in May!

Don't let the forecast of a cold May day deter you from a kayaking day out! The cooler weather actually brings fantastic paddling conditions. Just rug up a little and you'll be prepared for a terrific day out. We recommend wearing a lycra top or woollen thermals are great, topped off with a warm fleece/all weather jacket, lycra pants, woollen socks and booties. Oh - and don't forget your hat, sunscreen and sunnies too!

Basin is the Best!

A kayaking trip to Cabbage Tree Basin has got to be up there with one of the best adventures in the Shire. The basin is a 7 metre deep body of water nestled between the coastal suburbs of Bundeena and Maianbar. Access is via a narrow meandering inlet bordered by mangrove forests and salt marsh. The Basin is fed by Cabbage Tree Creek - a 200 metre long narrow creek which is fun to explore.
The area has a long and fascinating history and being sheltered and relatively un-disturbed possesses great ecological wealth in terms of the estuarine plant and animal species located throughout.
Our kayaking trip on Thursday couldn't have been better. The weather was perfect - sunny and warm and there wasn't a breath of wind to be felt and with 2 marine scientists on the trip it was a great opportunity to find out more about the abundant marine life that call the Basin home.
The basin is best reached at high tides of at least 1.6metres. Kayaks can be hired from Bundeena Kayaks at Bonnie Vale or you can book in for a guided tour. Check out http://www.bundeenakayaks.com.au/ for more information.

From A to B with Muffins!

The Audley to Bundeena kayaking trip went ahead despite predictions of showers and wind. Contingency plans were in place for evacuation from Warrumbul if the weather got bad and the happy paddlers started becoming not so happy! But fears for the worst dissolved into a glorious paddling adventure. Yes - there was rain (annoyingly interrupting our morning tea break!) but it only lasted for minutes and cleared leaving the water amazing still and quiet. Brian made it back in record time (must have been around 2 hours?). I hope he wasn't trying to avoid eating my home-made muffins (which were actually very yummy - despite my reputation as a non-cook). For everyone else, the trip took around 3 hours. The scenery was stunning and being a weekday the waterway was quiet (I think we only came across 1 motor boats). The help of a run out tide also meant it was not a demanding paddle - we could actually drift along and enjoy the trip. With lots of chatting, laughing and marvelling at our beautiful waterway - I'm sure I'm not alone in saying the trip was a great success! All trip pics have been uploaded to Bundeena Kayaks on FaceBook. Here is the link - I'm new to FaceBook so not sure if you need to be a member to view pages. See how you go. http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=96962&id=72084024433&saved#/album.php?aid=96962&id=72084024433&ref=mf

Audley to Bundeena Kayaking Adventure

Everyone is looking forward to the Audley to Bundeena kayaking adventure this Friday (27/3/2009)! This is a magical stretch of water starting at Reid's Flat at Audley and finishing at Bonnie Vale in Bundeena. We are towing a mix of double and single kayaks there and will meet the group at around 9.30am. Planned so as to take advantage of the run out tide, this should be a relatively cruisey trip with a planned morning tea stop off at Warrumbul. Previous paddling experience is required for this trip. If you are interested in coming along, give us a call on 9544 5294

Autumn Paddling at Bundeena Kayaks

Autumn just has to be the best time of the year to go kayaking - the water is still lovely and warm, the days are calm (mostly) and temps are still in the mid 20s. Now I don't know if it's just me seeing things or if this is for real - but the sky seems a more virbrant blue and the water is amazingly clear! Great conditions for taking perfect photos out on the water! So make the most of the Autumn months and plan a kayaking adventure today! Bundeena Kayaks is open 5 days (Wed to Sun throughout Autumn) with double, single and triple kayaks for hire. www.bundeenakayaks.com.au
